WORKSOP - GATEWAY TO THE DUKERIES
Worksop is an old Market Town with markets still held on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday together with a varied choice of shops ranging from Charity to High Street names.
Worksop is also known as the Gateway to the Dukeries which is an area some 24 x 10 miles south of the town created in eighteenth century when the Monarch of the day granted forest land to five noble Dukes to build country estates and villages.
The Dukes of Newcastle - Clumber Estate
Now owned by the National Trust Clumber Park offers grassland walks, cycle hire. The Chapel of St Mary the Virgin is set in stunning surroundings by the picturesque lake there is also a restaurant and shop.
The Dukes of Portland - Welbeck Estate
Until recently the Welbeck Estate was used the by Army for the training of young cadet officers before their entry into Sandhurst. There is also a Garden Centre, Farm Food Shop, 2 restaurants and the Harley Gallery exhibition.
The Dukes of Kingston - Thoresby Estate
Thoresby Hall is now a hotel & spa owned by Warners who offer
luxury breaks in the stunning surroundings. Also one of the largest
Sunday Markets is held on the Thorseby Estate.
The Dukes of Norfolk - Worksop Manor
The Manor House is currently being renovated by a private owner.
The Duke of Leeds - Kiveton Park
There is little of the estate left today.
Sherwood Forest
The Edwinstowe Visitors Centre is well worth a visit with maybe a walk
along the forest paths to the Major Oak followed by a walk around the
village which offers a variety of shops, pubs, coffee shops and
restaurants.
